A few years ago, I had a routine check-up at the hospital. As part of this check-up, the nurse wanted me to get an ECG. So, she connected me to the machine and, to pay for the machine, she asked for my credit card details. I gave her my card details, and she asked me for my 4-digit PIN so she could authorise the payment.

I was a bit hesitant about giving her my PIN, but she said that it would only be entered into the machine and that she would delete it as soon as the payment had been authorised. I had to give her my PIN because I had no cash with me, and I really wanted to get my ECG. I gave her my PIN, and she entered it into the machine, authorising the payment. Then, as she turned around to get the ECG results, she knocked over a cup of water, spilling it all over the machine. Unfortunately, my PIN had been entered into the machine a few seconds earlier, and, as the machine was now soaked, she had to reboot it.

So, when she rebooted the machine, she lost all of the information in it, including my PIN. I was very angry, and I was going to complain to the manager, but I was too embarrassed to do so. So, I just left.

A few days later, I got my bank statement, and they had paid £500 to the hospital. So, I rang them, and they apologised and reversed the payment. So, this is just a little heads up: always write your PINs down when you install them, so that you can just delete them later.
