When I was young, my family and friends believed in Santa. We wrote letters to him and left him cookies. I loved him.

When I got a little older and found out it was actually my mom/family/society pretending, I was mad. I got upset at my mom, and asked her why she lied to me. I was told that Santa is a fun tradition, and that the idea is not to lie to them, but to teach them that it's a game.

That way, when they found out it was actually you, they would just smile and go, "Oh, I thought it was fun to pretend! I'm glad you were in on it with me."

When my kid asked about Santa a few years ago, I told her the story of Santa. I showed her where the cookies go, and told her about how fun it is for parents to pretend.

Now, we make Christmas more about the fun of the game, than the actual presents, and we make sure to include her in it. It's a fun tradition.
