If you are eating a salad and you come across an insect (crunchy, chewy, or whole), just eat it. Eat it whole, eat it crushed, eat it chopped up.

First of all, you don’t want to alert anyone at the table that there is a dead insect in your food, trust me.

Secondly, you don’t want to alert the chef, if it’s a restaurant. The chef will likely just pull your entire batch of lettuce and inspect it, which might just find more insects. Now the entire batch is going to be tossed for one insect, which could be considered costly if the salad costs $20.

Thirdly, if you alert the waiter, the waiter will likely just tell the chef. If the chef doesn’t find it after a quick look, he will pull your entire batch of lettuce. See above.

Fourthly, if you alert the waiter, the chef still might not find it, and your entire batch of lettuce is now going to be tossed.

Fifthly, even if the chef does find it, he will likely just pull your entire batch of lettuce. See above.

Sixthly, the worst case scenario is that you eat the insect and it has died and decomposed a little bit. You would be surprised how many insects will still die from pesticides, even if they are picked. Pesticides are like a suicide pill to insects, and if they do manage to survive, they die quickly after. So unless you find an insect that has been sitting on a plate for hours, it is going to be dead. It’s also important to remember that insects are 70% water, and they are soft. So unless the insect is gigantic, you won’t be able to feel it in your food. If it is gigantic, then it’s likely not salad size.

Lastly, even if the insect is still alive, it will die as soon as it enters your stomach. It’s not the end of the world. I’m not advocating you eat dead mice or anything. Just don’t alert anyone.
