A little trick I picked up from my dad when I was in my late teens/early twenties.

Whenever we'd drink out of bottles, and there was a cap on it (like a soda or beer for example), he'd tell me to hold the cap on the mouth of the bottle with my other hand.

This helps prevent spills, and prevents the bottle from getting dirty. Also, when drinking directly from a bottle, the liquid is forced up at the bottle, which can create a bit of a mess. By holding the cap on, the liquid goes straight down your throat instead of all over the place.

This works for bottles with lids too!
