I was staking at a gas station in rurally Indiana on a work project in 2019. In the evenings I would go out to the gas station on the outskirts of the town I was staying in and read in my car.

I knew the workers at the gas station and they wanted to know that I was alright when they closed at 10 and I was still there. In the evenings I would sit and read and only come in for a bottle of water or a snack.

It was a quiet gas station at night, and I was able to read without many interruptions. I read without headphones and the radio was off. I was comfortable and it was a peaceful night.

I was reading with the dome light on, and the sun was setting. It was around 8:00 when I noticed a man pull up, and watch me. It was strange, but when I looked over he left and parked his car. He was wearing a black shirt and jeans. I figured he was just a weirdo and when I went in for something he would be gone.

I sat back down and started reading again, when I heard a rustle in the trash. I turned off the dome light and listen. It sounded like the man I saw earlier was rummaging through the trash. My window was cracked slightly, and when he heard me move he came over to my car.

He said Hi and I said it back to him. He started talking to me, and I didn't want to be rude so I listened. I did not know this man, but he said his name was Nick, and he was a long haul truck driver.

I noticed that Nick was not wearing black, but a green shirt and jeans. I had no idea what was going on, but I was slightly scared. I said I had to go and get a snack, and Nick offered me a piece of gum. I didn't want to be rude, but my stomach started to do flips.

I walked in, and the worker was listening to me tell her what had happened. I wanted to call the cops but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Nick was a nice guy, and I felt like I was a weirdo.

The worker told me that I was right to trust my gut. She said Nick was not the man I saw pull up earlier, but I didn't know. She was adamant that I call the cops because Nick was at least two men.

She said to go to my car and drive off. The cops would be there soon. I did, and I felt like an idiot. I drove past a mile and the cops were behind me with their lights on. They pulled me over and Nick walked over and they handcuffed him.

They said when they pulled up Nick had ran into the store. He had three other people in the car, all wearing the same outfit. I was hysterical. My worker rushed over and gave me a hug and told me she was so proud of me for trusting my gut.

The cops said that the group had been wanted for three months. They were a group of stalkers that would target women alone at night. They would always wear the same green shirt and jeans. They had no idea what they wanted, but they knew it wasn't good.

The worker told me that she was a cop, and she was working the night shift at the gas station to catch these men. She told me that I was the final piece in catching them. She told me the owner had wanted to fire her, but she convinced him to keep her.

I left the gas station in tears. I was so grateful for trusting my gut, but I was sad that I had to see this unfold. I thanked her, and gave her a hug. I went back to my hotel room and stayed there until morning.

I never went back to that gas station, and I never saw her again.

Nick is the guy I wanted to never meet.
