AITA for telling my niece she is a racist even though she’s autistic?

I am a teacher of 2nd graders. During the lockdown, it was hard to make lessons for my class since some kids are hard to reach, some have disabilities and some are just hard in general. I had one student with autism who used to cry a lot in the class, so I’d let him express himself freely as much as possible.

I recently had a new student move into our district in the last half of 5th grade before they entered 6th this year. This student is black, my district is almost entirely white. This child has some developmental disabilities and is in a special ed class.

My school put this black student in the same class as my autistic student, since we have a lot of experience with kids with disabilities.

It’s clear that this black student, let’s call him DeAndre, has some physical disabilities as well and has some coordination issues. I was happy to have him and was excited to help him reach his full potential.

Except I have an issue, my brother’s daughter and my class. She’s 12, and in my class, and has a huge issue with DeAndre. When I was teaching virtually, I had to remove her from the call because she kept saying the N word. She saw herself as a victim, because DeAndre had tried to hit her for calling him a N word.

I was more than patient with her, and with DeAndre, but my niece just kept being racist. She’d call him a monkey, complain about his color, all in front of me and the rest of the class. I had to speak to her privately multiple times, and finally I told her she couldn’t come to class anymore and to do the lesson at home.

Now my family is upset with me, but my principal is on my side. AITA?
