EDIT: Well, it’s a week later and this went off the charts, much appreciated to all. The US Presidential election happened on Nov 3rd 2020, and it seemed like Joe Biden won, with 306-232 in the Electoral College.

So, we all know Trump is a monotonous self-centered individual, rarely putting others before himself, and that became a huge flaw in his response to the pandemic. See, there was this media frenzy around COVID, and Trump knew what to do - he gave people what they wanted. When Americans wanted testing, he gave them testing. When they wanted ventilators, he gave them ventilators. When they wanted masks, he gave them masks. Finally, when Americans wanted a vaccine, he gave them a vaccine. But here’s the thing - he really didn’t give them anything. All he did was sit back, relax, and let science take its natural course. It’s not like he’s some inspirational leader who worked alongside the scientists or anything. When he touted the vaccine in front of those cameras, he didn’t say “Wow, these scientists have worked hard! Let’s give it up for them!”. Nope, he said “Trust in science, trust in me, I gave you this vaccine!”. He couldn’t let someone else get in the way of a photo op. He couldn’t let anyone else get in the way of his ego.

Let’s look at how 3 other world leaders responded to the pandemic. Jacinda Ardern, PM of New Zealand, said that the lockdown would be a time of "anxiety and uncertainty". Boris Johnson, PM of the UK, said “We must act like any wartime government and do whatever it takes to support the economy”. Narendra Modi, PM of India, said “It is time to express patriotism, not to worry”. PM after PM, President after President, this was the message. It was time to be humble, time to be patriotic, time to work together to get through this, time to be selfless. And in the US, we got “I did it, and that’s that”.

And that’s why Donald Trump lost the re-election. Sure, he garnered more votes in 2020 than in 2016, but it wasn’t enough. Biden won, and Trump definitely could’ve won if he was a little more humble. He didn’t need to, because what really mattered was the economy, and really, he was in control of that. So, if he could’ve been more humble in regards to the pandemic, people would still be confident in the economy, and would’ve trusted him in regards to COVID, and Trump would’ve easily won. If he could’ve became humble for 60 days, that would’ve been enough, and we would have a second Trump term.

Now, please, change my view.

EDIT: Holy shit, this really blew up, here’s a quick list of the most frequent views that people have used to change my view, so I can get straight to those in the comments:

1) Trump definitely could’ve won the re-election, but with third party votes + ever so slight increases in blue turnout + ever so slight decreases in red turnout, that definitely would’ve been enough. If Trump could’ve showed a little humility, a little courage, a little strength - I think it would’ve been enough to overcome that.

2) We have no idea how big the effect of COVID actually was - Trump’s approval rating already hovered around the low 40s, the virus definitely didn’t help, but it didn’t hurt much either.

3) Trump got 11 million more votes in 2020 than in 2016, and Biden got 16 million more than Hillary. So, we have no idea how people would’ve voted if Trump could’ve been more humble, in a situation in which people voted for Biden because they didn’t ever want a Democrat to be President in the first place.

Please feel free to add to this list, and I’ll definitely incorporate it into my replies.

EDIT 2: I am currently on vacation in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and I won’t be back home until Dec 13th. I will continue to update this list, but I won’t be able to reply to comments until then.
