General Motors will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options in its future models, opting instead for Google’s operating system.<br><br>GM exercised its option to end a licensing agreement to offer the two services in its vehicles, a person familiar with the matter said. They declined to be identified because the information wasn’t public.<br><br>The automaker plans to phase out CarPlay and Android Auto on the same timeline as Tesla, which ended support for the Apple and Google apps at the end of last year. GM had previously announced that it aims to begin phasing out the two services when it starts selling cars powered by Google Automotive Services in 2025.<br><br>The phase-out will happen in the following years as more vehicles are upgraded with the Google system, said the source. Vehicles with existing CarPlay and Android Auto options will continue to support the services for as long as they can be used.<br><br>GM’s decision to ditch CarPlay and Android Auto comes as it seeks to increase sales of cars with Google Automotive Services. Those models have built-in Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play app store. The automaker has committed to include Google’s technology in nearly all of its new models starting in 2025.<br><br>The source also said that the company decided to end support for the two services because they own too much data. But they did not elaborate on exactly what they meant by that.<br><br>As of last year, the two apps were available in nearly 80% of all new vehicles, including GM’s cars. But the company has been slowly phasing them out as it upgrades its technology.
