I’m infatuated with her.

Utterly infatuated.

And it wasn’t at a healthy level. far from it. I would think about her every moment she was away. I would sometimes sit on my couch and just stare at my phone waiting for her to text. I’d tell myself “Don’t contact her, give her space, it’s not mature to be this possessed by one person”. But then I’d still find myself clicking her name on my contact list before my self-conscious would remind me that I was being unreasonable.

But I couldn’t help myself.

When she was around me, it was the most calming sensation I had ever experienced. Everything was okay, and life was great as long as she was near. And she was an amazingly sweet girl too. I was the epitome of a “guy who doesn’t deserve the girl he’s dating” . Quite the burden to carry.

We had been together for about 3 months now, and I’ve been having the most delightful time of my life! We’ve had our first kiss, and first ‘I love you’. Our love was at that budding stage where we were both excited to grow old together. We were at that makeout-on-my-couch stage with Tinkerbell lighting up the night.

It was truly the most wonderful time of my life.

And that’s what made it all the more unexpecting and horrible when it all came crashing down.

About 6 days ago, I had stayed over her parent’s house for the night. It was 3 in the morning, and I had woken up to go to the bathroom. When I walked back into my girlfriend Candice’s room, she was dead asleep and saying something softly.

At first, I thought she was talking in her sleep. But as my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realized she was talking to somebody.

It was a man. And he was sitting on the computer desk in the corner of the room.

He was tall, and wore a long, black duster with a red shirt underneath. Har looked like a rejection from a terrible anime. He had jet black hair, and piercing green eyes that glowed in the dark. I could tell he was looking at me because I could feel his stare. I wanted to scream, I wanted to run, but most of all, I wanted to protect Candice.

But most of me was frozen in fear. I stood there, mouth agape, as the man talked to my girlfriend.

“What happened today?” He asked. He sounded very menacing, and very demonic.

“Some biker almost ran me over” She answered in a groggy tone.

“Did you get angry at the biker?” He continued. He sounded very demanding.

“Yes” She answered. I could tell she was starting to wake up.

“Did you hope the biker died?” He continued. I could tell he was getting agitated. He was starting to scare me.

This time, Candice didn’t answer. She was now awake, and she saw me. I stood there silently, frozen in fear. The man slowly stood up, and turned around. Candice watched us both, and slowly sat up.

“Candice, who are you talking to….” I started to say. But before I could finish, the man raised his hand, and I felt a sudden surge of pain in my chest. I rubbed my chest, writhing in pain. Candice started to scream, and then everything went black.

I woke up the next morning, Candice shaking me awake. “Hey, you okay? You fainted last night. I was worried sick, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?” She rained questions after questions on me, but all I could think about was the man from last night.

“Candice.. Who was that man last night?” I asked. Candice had a confused look on her face. “What are you talking about?” She asked. I started to describe the man, reminding her that she was talking to him, and she told me I must have been dreaming. But I know what I saw.

I wasn’t dreaming.

For the rest of the day, Candice was a bit quiet. I think she was starting to notice something was wrong with me. I was far from okay. I couldn’t stop thinking about the man.

I don’t know why, but I didn’t tell her about him. I felt she knew more than she was letting on, and I didn’t want to start anything with her.

It was sundown, and things started going back to normal. But that was when Candice really started acting strange. As the sun went down, Candice started to groan and be short with me. I’m not stupid; I know when a woman’s PMSing. I wanted to make things right between us, so I took her to a nice sushi bar in town. She wasn’t into sushi, but she wanted to try it out. I could tell she didn’t like it. She was picking at her food, not saying anything. We just sat there in an awkward silence the whole time.

I tried to make small talk, but she would just give me short answers. I tried to hold her hand, but she shook it off. I didn’t know how to make things right between us. I’ve never been in a serious relationship before. I was starting to feel like I had done something wrong. I just wished she would tell me what was wrong. I think the silence was the worst part.

When we left the restaurant, she said she wanted to go for a walk. I didn’t care; I just wanted to be near her. So we walked. We walked down the street, and into the nearby woods. It was dark, but the moon was full. I could see her face. She looked like she was dead. Emotionless, like a zombie. She looked like she had no life in her eyes. I had never seen her like that before. I don’t think anyone had.

We walked in silence for a while, until she stopped. We were at the edge of a cliff. Straight down into a river. It looked deep. It made me a little nervous.

“You can make a wish here” She said. She had a little smile on her face. We had never talked about a wish making tradition before. I was a little weirded out by it, but I wanted to make things right between us. So I played along. I closed my eyes, wished for the world’s biggest dick, and tossed a penny into the river.

When I turned around, Candice was already walking away. I had to run to catch up with her. She was walking at a brisk pace. She didn’t look back. I had to jog to catch up with her, and when I did, we were already walking back through the parking lot of the restaurant. My car was about 50 feet away from us. We were walking in silence again. I didn’t know how to break it. I wanted to, but I didn’t know what to say. I wanted her to smile at me again, but I had a feeling that may not happen anytime soon.

Before I could say anything, we had already reached my car. I fumbled with the key, and opened the passenger door for Candice while fumbling for my own door. Before I could open my door, I heard Candice say “I wish the person in that car dies”.

I looked around, and the only car near us was mine. I turned around to look at Candice, and she was staring at me with the most evil glare I have ever seen. I didn’t recognize that glare. It was a cold, demonic stare.

I didn’t say anything. We both got in the car, and Candice didn’t say a word during the whole car ride. We just sat in silence as I took her back to her parent’s house.

I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to say. Before I knew it, we had already pulled up to her house. I had been distracted the whole car ride with my own thoughts. I didn’t even remember driving until we had already arrived.

The whole car ride, I had been contemplating whether she had been talking about me or not. I didn’t want to think she was, but things were not looking good. When we pulled up to her house, I finally got the courage to talk.

“Candice, are you okay? You’ve been acting strange since sundown” I asked. I was trying to be nonchalant about it, but I think it came off wrong.

“I’m fine. I don’t want to talk about it” She answered. She looked straight at me, and smiled. It was an emotionless smile. She looked emotionless. She opened the passenger door, and got out. Before I knew it, she had already walked into her house.

I sat there for a minute. I didn’t know what to do. I had never been in a situation like this. I started the car, and drove off. I didn’t know what
