“Yo, I’m really sorry but we missed our exit up back, mind if we hop in the back seat? We’re not gonna try anything, I promise”

This is my first post in LetsNotMeet. I’ve been lurking here for a while now and I have to say, I love the content. I’ve got a story for you guys and it requires a bit of back story.

I used to work as a Uber driver part time. I did it for about a year before I quit. I had only one truly negative experience. I’m not sure if anyone else here has done this job but I’m not going to lie, I would accept rides while I was still on a ride. Like if I had a passenger headed to point A and I got a request for a ride from point B that was along the way to point A, I’d accept it. Given that I wouldn’t have to divert from my course, and the passengers from point B were ok with getting in a car with other people in it (which they always were), I figured I’d make some extra money with minimal added time.

One night I was headed to the highway and I accepted a ride headed to the next city. It was a quick 10 minute drive and I figured I could make a few extra dollars on the way to my first passenger’s location.

At the time, Uber didn’t really have a way to communicate with both riders at once. You could contact them separately but that was a little inconvenient. Plus, when you accept another ride while you already have one, Uber lets the riders know you aren’t headed directly to them. I figured I’d explain to both of them at the same time.

I pulled up to the second set of riders and hopped out to explain to them what was going on.

“There’s already somebody in the car right now. I can either drop them off first and it’ll be about a twenty minute ride or you guys can hop in the backseat and I can take you first. I just figured I’d ask you because it’s a shorter drive and I’m already here.”

They seemed to understand. We chatted for a moment and they agreed to let me take them first. They got in the back and I went to explain the situation to the girl in the passenger seat.

She seemed a bit taken aback but she agreed. I told her that I had just accepted the second ride before I picked her up, but really what had happened was the exact opposite. I had accepted her ride first, which is why I thought it would be in poor taste to explain that I had accepted the second ride first. I didn’t want her thinking I had chosen to give a ride to strangers over giving her a ride alone.

I told her the two people in the back were a couple. She seemed a bit uncomfortable but she understood. The ride went smoothly. My first passenger only spoke to me a couple times and her last words to me were “Good luck” as I dropped her off.

Then it was just me and the couple in the back. We chatted for a while. I found out they had been together for over 10 years. We talked about a lot of things and got pretty well acquainted. The ride went by very quickly and before long, I was dropping them off.

The man gave me a $10 and a fist bump as he got out. The woman leaned forward and whispered in my ear.

“There was nobody in the passenger seat before we got in, was there?”

I smiled wryly and shook my head.

I watched them walk inside a bar I had apparently dropped them off in front of. I pulled away and deleted the ride. On the way home, I wondered how long they had been in the back seat before I had told them the truth. And if I had been wrong to make up that story.

I hope the imaginary couple in the front passenger seat never meet the real couple who sat in the back seat that night.
