Why was it so hard for European powers to conquer Ethiopia?

It was one of only two African nations that wasn't conquered in the Scramble for Africa and for centuries was a thorn in the side of European powers who wanted to take it. What were some reasons that the Ethiopians were able to resist European attempts at colonization for so long?
