I know it sounds pedantic, but this is one of those things that make me roll my eyes every time I hear it. There are a dozen reasons why I don't like this:

1) "Structure" means a system or a way of organizing or arranging something, not a collection of physical things. (The phrase "building structure" is an oxymoron because of this.)
2) If you call a house a structure, it's not hard to imagine how someone could call a car a "structure", or even a bridge. I mean, what's the difference? The difference between a building and a car is the fact that the building is designed to be a shelter, and the car is not. If we start using the word "structure" to refer to buildings, what prevents us from using it for everything?
3) "Building" is a very simple word that's very easy to say and understand, while "structure" is more complicated.
4) I think the word "structure" sounds too big and dramatic to refer to something as small as a house. "Structure" sounds like the word you'd use to describe the United Nations.

And yes, I understand what you mean when you use the word. But if you want to make a strong impression on your audience, use a word that actually makes sense.
