I never thought I’d actually say this but… I am done

I’m crying a little as I type this but after 20 years of teaching I am done. I teach at a high school with a very special population. I work with students who are medically fragile, have severe cognitive impairments and need additional support. I love this population. I love interactive hands free ways to teach. I love how happy they are when they do something they have never done before.

This time it’s not the kids or parents. This time it’s the principal.

I came in today to set up my classroom and I was met with a lot of changes. All of our rooms were sub par, we have had mold in my room and the school ratio is 5:1:1. When the new principal came in summer of 2022 he said he put in a huge request for a new building. He stripped our rooms, took all of the manipulatives, and put them in storage so that if we were going to move we wouldn’t have to pack.

We didn’t move. He now has 2 years worth of grants he hasn’t touched and he’s now decided to go for the new building in 5 years.

He refused to let us get anything back that he took. So I spent a few weeks getting my room back together.

Today I came in and it was a mess. All of my things that he didn’t take but I was able to get were thrown everywhere. I rolled up this rug and it was soaking wet. I rolled it out on the floor.

Come to find out the maintenance crew had ripped down all of the bulletin boards. Took every rug, every interactive poster, anything that was attached to the wall is gone.

The principal today had a meeting with the staff. He said he thinks the school is a dump. He thinks the kids don’t deserve anything but the best.

If that’s so then why are you waiting for 5 more years to ask for a new building. Why don’t you fix the mold? Why didn’t you use the grant money you had?

I’m done. He said he emptied 1/2 of the rooms. He told us put what you need in your room and the rest can go. What?? The kids deserve better.

I’m done. I already put my retirement papers in in June. I changed my mind. I’m giving my 30 days notice today.
