This happened at 3am on an August night in 2008, when I was 18. I never forgot this and I wanted to share this because it is truly a strange night and experience. Please note that this happened in a different country from the US. The police weren't called, nothing came out of this.

I live in a house that faces the street, it's a pretty busy street and there is a bus stop outside our gate. I was jolted into consciousness in the dead of night by persistent knocking on my bedroom window. I opened it thinking it was my friend but there was a man there, his face barely lit by the streetlamp. He said "You, girl, come out". I was confused and said "who is this?" and he said he was looking for someone and thought it was me. I still tried to get details out of him and he said he was looking for his friend and that his friend was last seen walking to our house. All my friends he could have been looking for had cars so I thought that was strange. I still tried to get more out of him and he said that his friend told him he was going out on a date and he was supposed to pick him up last night but his friend never texted him where they went. I didn't want to tell him that I didn't know who he was talking about or that he was lying because I didn't want to piss him off so I pretended to still be looking for details in my brain. I still don't know why this man thought my house was a good place to knock on.

I was trying my best to pretend to be sleepy and still half asleep, and still trying to find out his true purpose. But after he had started talking to me for a few minutes, he said "are you gonna come out or not? I've been walking this neighborhood for hours" so I knew I couldn't keep him there for long. There was a part of me that was scared that he would break my window. So I said "fine, but I'm still in my robe" and he said to just come as I was. My room is in a corner of the house right next to our front gate, so the only thing separating me from him was the gate.

Now, my brother, as I said was 12 at the time, he was a shy kid who still didn't talk much. And I was a pretty lazy person who kept my keys in the same spot on my desk every day. So I don't know what made me do it but I left the window open, went to my desk and got my keys. The only set of keys I had was the ones that opened the front gate. so I put it in my robe, and ran back to the window. The guy was visibly annoyed but he told me he couldn't leave the gate and find another way to enter because he didn't know where the other doors were. I apologised and said to be patient. When I got back to the window, I pretended to trip on the bars and fumbled and dropped the keys. He started cursing at me so I told him "Sorry! Don't curse at me! I'm still trying to help you find your friend". I crawled under my bed and stuck my hand under it and tossed the keys to the side on the floor. I kept pretending to look for the keys and pushing them further back, until he began to get truly frustrated. He started hitting the window and said "Do you have the keys or not? You think you're smart? Because you're not. You're not as smart as you think you are".

This was when my brother tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and saw him holding the keys. I don't know how he got in my room without me noticing or how he even knew what was going on. I whispered to him "what are you doing? Give me the keys" and he just shook his head. "What are you doing? Give her the keys" the guy said and my brother still didn't say anything. By this point, I was truly fearing for my safety because I didn't know what this guy was gonna do to get to me. And I knew my parents were too far to run to. So I screamed at my brother. And my brother threw the keys into the room above mine through the verandah and shut my door.

The guy cursed and started hitting the window harder and harder and my brother and I could hear him shouting to his friend to "get the keys from the other side". So we ran up to the room and met his friend. There were two of them.

We both ran into the room and shut the door and the two of us began to fight for the key. I couldn't fight off a grown man and after some struggle, he got the key and ran back down the verandah and opened the front gate. After that, I could hear the two of them opening every door of the house trying to get to us. I told my brother to get under the bed and I looked for something to defend myself with but there was nothing. And this is what my brother did that saved me that night. My brother didn't get under the bed. After 5 minutes, the guy on my verandah gave up and he went back down and started knocking on my window again. And my brother went back down and opened the window and said "I thought you had the key?" and the guy cursed and called him a little bitch and said to get back to sleep because they were leaving.

I don't know how my brother saw into my future and knew what to do. What would have happened if they had gotten in my room? They would have woken everyone up. At least by sending my brother back downstairs, he made them think that we had given up trying to defend ourselves and gone back to sleep.

I don't think they were looking for me specifically but my brother and I have lived in that house since we were kids and I can't think of any of my friends who doesn't have a car. Also, if it was a prank or a dare or a mistake, why didn't they do anything about it after that? Nothing happened to us after that. We never saw them again. So I don't understand. Regardless, I'm just glad my brother saved me that night.
