Why do so many Americans work so many hours?

You would think that the USA, as one of the wealthiest countries in the world, would have more free time, but in average Americans work a lot more than Germans (who live much better, have better economy and don't have homeless people), or Canadians or Australians, Swedes etc, even in the wealthy parts of Asia like Singapore or South Korea.<br><br>Americans work on average 1804 hours/year, while Germans work 1330 hours/year, Brits work 1642 hours/year, Canadians work 1691 hours/year… even Japanese work 1731 hours… <br><br><br>And I read that Americans do not only work a lot but work long hours in one go with little breaks. It just seems like such a weird system to me.
