What was society like in the years leading up to 9/11?

This is mostly for young people who weren't alive at the time. I've been interested in hearing people's personal experiences of the time, so I thought I'd ask here. I've been doing a lot of research on the period, and I'm still having a hard time imagining what it felt like to live through it. Just to clarify, I mean the period from about 1996-2001.<br><br>&#x200B;<br><br>The closest modern comparison I can think of is the way people talk about Trump's campaign for POTUS in 2016, but I imagine this would be on a completely different level.<br><br>&#x200B;<br><br> tl;dr what was society like in the years leading up to 9/11?
