Hi all, this is a new (throwaway) account as I don't want to compromise my identity. I just need some reassurance that this is the right decision.

I am a victim of domestic abuse, I have been trapped with my abuser for nearly 4 years, this is my 9th attempt to leave. I was born in Ireland, but I have British citizenship, because my father is Welsh, I have an Irish passport, I have never tried to claim asylum before, because I don't want to abuse the system. My great aunt went through direct provision, and the waiting time was years, I understand that Ireland is obligated to offer asylum to everyone, but I am British, I don't want to be vulnerable to being deported. I know it's a stupid worry, and maybe I am being paranoid, but I am doing this for my toddler.

He is all I have left, my abusive ex, killed my dog of 15 years, and he has destroyed my business. I just want my son to have a happy life, but I am on my own, I am not stupid, I have tried many other ways to escape, I have tried dozens of times, but I have no family to turn too, and I have no willpower left, I have no idea who to turn to and I don't want to turn my son in to a charity case. But I have no choice, I asked for help from women's aid in the UK, but they have given up on me, because I keep going back, I know it's my fault, but my abusive ex, he is clever, he has convinced everyone else, even my own mother that I am a bad mother, and that's why I am scared, that's why I am running to Ireland.

I know it's not fair, because I am British, I have no right to claim asylum, but I have to try, not for myself but for my son. I have nothing left to lose, and my abusive ex, he doesn't know this, he thinks I am sleeping, but I have packed my son's bags, I have packed my own bags, and I am taking my chances, I am driving to Dublin, and I am going to claim asylum.

Wish me luck, I can only hope I am doing the right thing.
