You wake up in a bed not your own, in a room not your own, but something feels off, and the person on the couch next to you isn't going to let you remember.

The first time it happened, I was twelve. I was on the island, at the lake house. I'd gone to bed by myself, kind of exhausted and lonely. My parents were in a bad spot at the time, had been divorcing for over a year. I was the oldest kid, so I had a younger brother and sister, and they'd split us among them. Diana went with Mother, and James went with Father. And I was left on my own for a while, and alone on the island. So I'd gone to bed by myself, and laid there for a while, thinking about it. Then I must have fallen asleep.

Because I woke up in a bed not my own, in a room not my own, in a house not my own. I sat up in bed and rubbed my eyes. It was kind of like a hotel, I thought. The bed was one of those fancy hotel beds, and the room was really nice. I didn't recognize it though, and I had no idea how I got there. I didn't even remember leaving the island. I'd gone to bed...

I threw off the covers and kind of stumbled out of bed, onto the floor. It was soft and fuzzy.

That was when I saw him. He was sitting on a big, green couch, in one corner of the room. He was a man, but he was wearing a levitation pack. I'd only ever seen those in the vids. They allowed people to levitate themselves, and move around. The pack was made for disabled people, or warfare.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I'm... uh, a nurse," he said, smiling at me. "What's your name, little girl?"

"Kat. Who are you?"

"I kind of told you already. How did you get here?"

"I don't know. I fell asleep, I think. Yeah." I nodded. "What's your name?"

"I'm Alex. What kind of place do you think this is?"

"A hotel."

"If you were in a hotel Kat, do you think you would kind of... forget how you got here?"

"No."

"Well, what if I were to tell you that you've never been to a hotel before?" he said, crossing his arms over his chest. "You've never been to a place like this before. So maybe it's not a hotel. Maybe you have no idea where you are."

"I don't know where I am," I said.

He nodded. "Exactly. I think you should get back to bed, Kat. You need to rest."

"I need to go home!"

He shook his head. "No, I don't think so."

"I want to go home!"

He smiled. "Sorry Kat. Not yet."

"I want to go home!"

He raised his voice. "No, Kat! Now go back to bed!"

"Fine!" I said, and I walked back to the bed, and laid down. I pulled the covers up over myself, and put my face in the pillow.

The room faded from my memory, and I forgot even having seen that man on the couch, until the next time.
