My grandpa told me that when he was young, they used to call a certain popular soda “pop", that's how names for soda came about. Is this true?

My grandpa told me that when he was young, they used to call soda “pop". He said that they would call it “pop” because they loved the sound of the bottle cap popping, which added flavor to the soda. He said that one day a man saw all his friends calling it “pop", so he thought “pop” would be the perfect name for soda. I don’t know if this is a story my grandpa made up that he passed down to me, but I don’t know if its true or not, do any of you know?
