I've never been more scared in my life. I was going to reach for my gun, but then I thought, "Wait. I've done nothing wrong. Don't give them an excuse to shoot me."

"Who is it?"

"Police. Can you open the door?"

I open the door.

"What's going on?"

"I'm looking for [Name]."

Heart sinks. I know exactly who they're looking for. Me.

"Why? What's going on?"

"We had a report of a man going into your address with a gun. We just need to make sure you're safe."

"Huh? I live here. I have a gun. I can tell you I'm perfectly safe."

"You're [Name]?"

"Yes."

"Sir, I'm sorry for the scare. It seems like it was a false report. Stay safe."

I shut the door. It's 11pm. I immediately check my gun and make sure I'm ready to go.

It's 11:15pm. Doorbell rings. I know exactly who it is. I've been expecting them. I go to the door. I see two officers on my front porch, man and a woman. I open the door. Woman immediately draws down on me.

"Put your hands up! Get on the ground!"

I comply. I know exactly that saying anything else other than "I'm not resisting arrest!" is going to make it look like I'm resisting. I try my hardest to not look like I'm resisting. They cuff me.

"What did I do?"

"You're under arrest for having a firearm."

"What? It's legal. I have all the permits. I'm not doing anything wrong. My concealed carry license is [License Number]. You can look it up yourself."

"I don't care. You're under arrest. We had a report of a man walking into your house with a gun."

"I live here! Of course I have a gun!"

"I don't care. You're going to jail, and your guns are going to be confiscated."

I'm dragged out in my boxers, thrown in the back of a cop car, and taken to the police station. I'm thrown in a cell.

The next morning, they let me out. The woman who arrested me shows up. "You're free to go. Your guns were perfectly legal. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. But next time, when you hear a knock on the door, just don't answer it. You're right. You did nothing wrong. But it's just easier if you don't answer the door."

And with that, she walked away.

Edit for visibility:

1. I've been lawyered up for over a year for an upcoming civil case.
2. I live in Chicago proper. I have a valid FOID card and CCL.
3. I did not sue the city. I sued the officers personally.
4. The report came from a neighbor who saw me walking into my house with a gun. Yes, really.
5. I have a doorbell camera with a microphone. I have audio and video footage. That was a big help.
6. This happened in October. The update, if anyone wants it, is that I won. The money doesn't matter. What matters is that the cops who did this have been fired and charged with breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon, and trespassing.
7. I have an upcoming post on r/confession. It's basically the same thing word for word, but from the perspective of the arresting officer. She's a reddit user. Go read it.

Edit 2:

I'm blown away by the support. Thank you for the awards. Thank you for the gold. I'm so glad that I called the cops on the cops. It means everything to me.

People have been asking why I didn't sue the city. The lawyer's exact quote was, "If we sue the city, you'll win. But you'll only get $20,000. If we personally sue the cops, we'll win. And you'll get $200,000."

So I personally sued the cops.

Also, people have been asking what my lawyer said when I told him the story. "I believe you. Don't worry. We'll get them."

I refuse to answer any more questions, because the trial is not over yet.
