When used as a statement of affirmation, 'you're doing great, keep it up' can have a few issues. For instance, if you say it to someone, and it turns out they're not doing great, you may have just made them feel worse.

One example of this I've seen is in the context of job interviews. Many people give this as advice. So, if you're the interviewer, and the person says it back to you, they assume they're getting the job. But they may not be. So, they feel worse at the end of it because they've been rejected. You've just inadvertently made them feel bad.

If you don't say it, then you've just given an affirmation. If it turns out they're not doing well, it's not your fault because you weren't trying to make them feel a certain way.

This works for any interaction where you're giving a statement of affirmation.
