When I was 9 I gave my mom a used tampon

I (M30) am just recalling this memory out of nowhere. This was when I was 9, I had an older sister (F24 now) at the time who was 8. Both of us were in that weird age where we didn’t quite understand what tampons were/where they went but we knew they were for women.

One day when I was playing in my room I saw a tampon that was on the floor that my sister had dropped. It was open and the tampon part was stained with some blood (I guess she started her period and didn’t finish using it).

Around the same time my mom comes walking into my room and says she’s in a lot of pain with her period and is going to the car to go to the pharmacy to buy tampons. I don’t know why but I decided to give her the tampon I found. She’s holding a glass of cranberry juice (she just refilled it) and has her arms full when I give it to her.

She’s taken aback when I give it to her and I tell her to use it for her period pain. She starting yelling at me and I don’t remember exactly what she said but it was something along the lines of “do you not notice that there’s BLOOD on it? Where did you even get this? This is disgusting and used!”

In my head I’m like “oh shit, I messed up”. So I tell her “I’m sorry! I just wanted to help”. She goes on her usual schtik about how I’m the most dumber/most embarrassing child and that I do stupid shit on purpose. For some reason she didn’t even make me take out the trash that night.

People always talk about period stigma but to see my mom throw a fit over it was just shocking. I don’t think I reversed the period stigma, but I think I might have created one.
