Would society be better if we limited access to higher education?

If we instead put more into trade schools and vocational training. Tbh I have met a chemist who wanted to become a doctor but couldn’t get in so now he’s working as a manager at a McDonald’s and he doesn’t use the degree he got from university. This happens all the time and it’s made me wonder if we should limit people’s access to education at higher levels of study. I’d hope the only degree where this isn’t true would be the STEM fields but other than that and I guess law and English lit and history, people don’t immediately jump to a career that uses their degree.
