I was a Gamestop Manager for 12 years, ending in 2018.

Back in the day, we didn’t have cameras above every shelf and pea counters at our district managers. We didn’t have the disc membership and power rewards to squeeze extra money out of customers and to help get us to absurd sales targets.

When I managed, we had actually crack downs to make sure people weren’t stealing. I was told by my district manager to terminate anyone I caught stealing, because not only would we lose trust in that employee, but we’d be forced to terminate anyone else that worked in that store, or we’d be considered complicit in the theft.

My district manager was a by the book person. You’d have to be crazy to steal in that district, but I did.

I was pretty much the hero of my district, so I imagine that’s what made them trust me so much and why they never questioned me.

I was always very talented at selling. I didn’t really like it, so I’d make sure to get my numbers in the first two weeks of the month so I could then sit at my desk and just do my paperwork. My district manager joked about how I was the only manager he knew that could do both 3k in used games and 3k in new games, when the district target was $4,500.

One day, I decided to take a game that was still sealed in the plastic, and instead of taking it to the back to my office, I took it to the front and put it on the floor.

I then sold that game to a customer and instead of putting the money in the cash register, I just pocketed it.

It was that simple.

No one was paying attention and the district didn’t track anything, so I was able to do that for 8 years.

I had no accountability.

It was both exciting and scary.

I never took anything else except for games, because if I got caught with anything else, I was fired.

But used games were a different story.

I was able to change the prices of used games in the computer.

I’d price something for $3 and then in the computer I’d enter it as $1.

I did that do for 8 years.

I’d change the prices on an average of 40 used games a day and I worked 5 days a week.

That’s $40 a day.

I’d say on an average, it was about $10,000 a year minimum.

I never stole anything else except for used games.

I never did anything else that would lose me my job.

I always hit my sales targets.

I always pushed our pre-orders.

I always pushed our rewards cards.

I’d sell 500 mag subs a month. I’d sell 500 used games a month.

I crushed my numbers and would always meet my plan.

I’d always make sure to help out other stores.

I’d always hit my trades.

I’d make sure the other stores hit their trades.

I was a manager that ran different stores during the day.

I’d rotate to different stores to make sure they were running correctly.

I covered shifts when other managers were off.

I’d do whatever the district wanted me to do and I still did what I wanted to do.

I had no accountability.

I’d work my ass off and I’d get a 1% raise.

I’d always meet to my set plan, which was always higher than the previous year, and if I met my plan, I’d do the bare minimum and take the rest of the year off.

I made a lot of money doing what I wanted to do.

I’d steal from Gamestop, sell it to my competition and then buy it back for cheaper.

I never cared about Gamestop.

I cared about me.

I cared about my wallet.

I cared about my district managers wallet.

That’s it.

I’d work my ass off then do the bare minimum because that’s what I cared about: my wallet.

I stole from Gamestop for 8 years and I got away with it.

I stole from Gamestop and I still managed to run 3 successful stores.

I stole from Gamestop and I still managed to hit my sales targets.

And I didn’t get caught.
