Everyday, my sophomores end class by 15 minutes of reading. It’s supposed to be an independent activity so I have time to write on papers. I walk around and help if they need it.

Today, I walked by a boy and I said, “what are you reading?”

He looked up at me and said, “you’re so cute.”

I was caught off guard and speechless. I said, “excuse me? That’s so inappropriate and you know that.”

He said, “what? I just told the truth.”

I asked him why that was acceptable and he said, “it’s not a big deal knoe.”

I said, “well it is a big deal. I’m your teacher and I deserve to be treated like that. You wouldn’t say that to your principal or vice principal.”

He was being very stubborn so I said, “if you told your best friend or your sister that was inappropriate, do you know why?”

He said, “no.”

I said, “because I’m your teacher.”

He said, “so what?”

I said, “you don’t understand that it is because of power. You do not have the power to say that to me.”

He said, “so what?”

I said, “I’m not going to argue with you about this. This is your warning. You do it again and I’m writing you up and you’re going to Saturday school. Got it?”

He said, “yeah.”

I was so frustrated. I told my department chair and she said, “he wants to get you in trouble.” We have a lot of problems with this at my school. Boys make inappropriate comments to get teachers in trouble or written up.

How would you handle this?
