I’m not a gun owner, but I’m about to be.

I’m not even sure if I’m comfortable posting this on Reddit, this is the only space I can think of to voice this. I’m a 30 year old woman and mother of a 10 month old. I’m not normally into guns, I don’t have anything against them. It just isn’t something I’ve ever been passionate about or thought I needed. I’ve held a couple of guns and fired them once. I do have a few family members who are gun owners though.

With the way the world is now and how it seems everything is just so volatile, I’m considering getting a gun for protection. I know a lot of this has to do with Trump and Biden and it’s been a problem before that, but I don’t ever remember the world being this volatile. It’s like no one can even have a civilized discussion anymore without it turning into an argument. I’m worried for my safety and the safety of my family, especially now since my son is here. I don’t want to just sit there and watch someone hurt him.

I know this is probably the “wrong” place to post this, but I figured it was worth a shot. I know a lot of people here must own a gun or two. What would you recommend for a first time gun owner, specifically a woman with a baby? I also am on a tighter budget and don’t want to spend too much money.

I know the first thing you all are going to say is “get training” and that’s what I’m working in. I don’t even have the money for the gun right now, let alone training. I just started saving specifically for the gun and I don’t know how long it’ll take until I get enough. I know the prices are currently jacked up because of COVID, but I really don’t want to wait to get one. The safety of my family should obviously come first in my opinion.

This may not be the best place to ask, but wanted to get more information from those who actually know about guns.

Edit: thanks guys, this is really cool to see. I pulled a Schroedinger and put the money in a separate account that I can only access from my bank’s website /mobile app. I have to mail myself the debit card for this account specifically. I will add to it periodically as I can t. Hopefully I can get enough before too long. I’m really excited now. Thanks for the advice.
