How did the US react to Eleanor Roosevelt becoming the first lady?

I keep seeing people being shocked that Melania Trump has been ‘awarded’ with some sort of women in the year award, not that she really deserved it, but more because she’s the first immigrant to be a First Lady in over 100 years. I’m curious to know how the US reacted when Eleanor was the first lady as she was an immigrant from Germany. I understand that attitudes to immigration are different now but I would be thankful if someone could tell me how the general public reacted. Do you think that they would have had the same reaction had she been from Mexico or Central America?
